CROSSING

Stencils, Temporary Spray Paint

Individual Crabs: 6–8 inches. Installation size varies.

At one time blue crabs blanketed the South Florida roadways in quantities that could stop traffic. The post-war population boom and resultant loss of habitat impacted the visibility of blue crabs in the area. The Crossings project consists of dozens of blue crabs spray painted across roadways. They are painted with a temporary paint that washes away within days providing a narrow opportunity for a sighting. Painting the crabs across the road adds humor, nostalgia and whimsy to the urban environment while at the same time comments on the impact of our attempts to coexist with native species.

Life-size reflective vinyl stickers of the blue crabs were also distributed to attendees.
