SILENCE

640x480 px website screengrabs

Silence explores the environment of intimidation during the early days of the Internet. Many women were unwelcome and bullied in this evolving social space. Abuse came in the form of name-calling and other derogatory comments. Bullies grew more brazen operating under anonymous screen names. Many women found it easier to pose as men to lend validity to their on-line voice.

Name-calling and intimidation experiences are not unique to women. The Silence website combines quotes, images and interaction to create an experience that reveals how voices are silenced through intimidation.

The site invites the viewer to participate by contributing their own experience. The version included here includes an archive of some of the comments contributed but is no longer invites comments.
